When brides and grooms step onto the grounds of Caribou Bay Retreat, they often see the magic first—the twinkle lights draped across the grapevine ceiling in our Event Center, the private lake shimmering at sunset, or the sound of laughter floating from the firepit where guests gather. What they don’t always see is the quiet heartbeat behind it all: the daily rhythm of life at the retreat, where every detail is lovingly cared for so couples can simply arrive and fall in love with their wedding day.

As the owner of Caribou Bay, I thought I’d take you behind the scenes—into a day in the life here—to show you not just the place, but the heart that makes it home.

Morning: Preparing the Stage

The day begins in the soft glow of Wisconsin sunrise. From the windows of the guest house, the logs gleam golden as the mist rises over the lake. I start my morning with a walk down to the shoreline. There’s something sacred about those still waters—this private lake has witnessed vows whispered under an arbor, flower girls skipping stones, and couples stealing a quiet moment away from the crowd.

By mid-morning, it’s time for details. Chairs are placed with care in the chapel or at one of our lakeside ceremony spots, ensuring every seat has a perfect view. I check the Event Center, where 10,000 tiny lights twinkle overhead, to make sure the grapevine ceiling still shimmers like stars. The vintage touches—the galvanized tin at the bar, the rustic-elegant décor—get polished and refreshed. Even our Adirondack chairs on the deck are brushed clean, waiting for a bride and groom to pause together before the celebration begins.

Afternoon: Welcoming & Working Alongside Couples

No two weddings at Caribou Bay Retreat are ever alike. That’s part of the beauty of this place. One afternoon, I may be walking a bride through table settings, holding up napkin swatches under the golden light to help her decide between emerald green ribbons or crisp white. Another day, I might be with the groom at the bar, laughing as he plans the perfect signature cocktail to surprise his guests.

These are the moments when I feel the heartbeat of Caribou Bay most strongly. My role isn’t just about managing a venue—it’s about listening. About understanding a couple’s vision and quietly making sure no detail is overlooked. Our Day-of Coordinator is often by my side, fine-tuning timelines, placing florals, and ensuring the couple has nothing to worry about but soaking in the joy of the day.

Evening: The Magic of Celebration

When evening falls, Caribou Bay transforms. The Event Center glows like a dream—music floating through the rafters, tables draped in candlelight, glasses clinking at the bar. Outside, firepits crackle, and guests laugh under the stars. The Ice Age Trail winds quietly beyond the trees, a reminder of the timeless beauty surrounding us.

And then it happens: the moments that make every ounce of preparation worthwhile. A bride steps onto the dance floor, her dress swirling under the lights. A groom pauses, hand on his new wife’s back, as they both look around the room filled with everyone they love. Parents tear up. Friends cheer. The lake reflects a sky painted with stars.

From the outside, it may look effortless—but behind the scenes, it’s a symphony of care.

Why I Love What I Do

Owning Caribou Bay Retreat is more than a business—it’s a calling. Every week, I have the privilege of stepping into love stories at their most beautiful chapters. I see nervous smiles transform into tears of joy, and I watch families come together under one roof for a weekend that will never be forgotten.

For me, it’s about more than rustic charm or elegant details (though those are plentiful here). It’s about creating a place where love can breathe, where couples can feel at home, and where every detail whispers, “this day is yours.”

That’s the heart behind Caribou Bay. Not just a wedding venue, but a retreat for love, laughter, and forever memories.
